Part of the problem we have in this world is that "freedom" is not the ability to do anything we want, but freedom should be to do what we "ought".

There is no doubt in my mind that a purely libertarian view of the world (i.e., one taken to its extreme) would result in anarchy. There is in my mind a proper role for the government that is consistent with the concepts of the founders. In general, the further you get from the people the more limited government should be.

So for example, if a city government wants to ban abortion, allow gay marriage and require all citizens to own a gun all at the same time and they can get it passed, while I may disagree with any one of them it is up to them. If the citizens of that city don't like these laws they can vote them out or worst case, they can simply move to the adjacent city that doesn't have a law they object to.

As for state government it should necessarily be more limited than local government because their decisions impact more people than they actually may be closely connected to. As for the federal government it should be the most limited of all because frankly when they pass laws and issue new regulations it impacts the entire country and our only recourse as an individual is our one vote and the voting with our feet by leaving the U.S. We have seen this happen in spades with big corporations that go to other countries with lower tax rates and regulations.

Unfortunately over the last 50 years our federal government has become way too intrusive, overbearing and expensive. The problem actually started with Abe Lincoln but really accelerating with FDR. Since then both Democrats and Republicans have shared in this grotesque growth in government to one degree or another. So when the federal government intrudes on the proper role of local government it is our duty and obligation to push back.
