I really don't believe that a 3rd party is the answer. If you compare our goverment to countries with multiple parties (more than 2) it seems to me that we are much more functional (albeit we have our moments). In countries with multiple parties what happens is they all obtain a portion of the vote. In order for a government to be seated these disparate groups must come together in order to form a ruling coalition. This creates strange and disfunctional bedfellows that are not a stable, lasting partnership. In fact, they usually come together as a partnership of convenience because the one thing they have in common is they don't like the other guys. So the government forms and then some bump in the road happens, the coalition falls apart and they have to scrap the government and call for elections. I really don't like the idea of that happening in the U.S. At least with the two party system for national elections we end up with a winner and we all reconcile ourselves to four years of that government.

What currently happens in the two party system is essentially the same thing except you don't have these wildly disparate groups coming together just to knock off the other guy. In our two party system we start with large groups of people that believe many of the same things with internal groups that differ on one or two issues, often vehemently. Which of those issues dominate the party platform will wax and wane depeding on the circumstances and mood of the country. Thie year the Democrat party was dominated by anti-war issues and Obama is the nominee. McCain is the nominee on the other side for a variety of reasons and while he is not my favorite he and I agree on many more things than I do with Obama. So I will vote for him. Is it perfect? No. Do I get a candidate that 100% agrees with my view of the world? Never have yet. Would I prefer multiple parties where the candidate that does agree 100% with my position has no hope of winning? Not by a long shot.
