I received a fiberglass boat today to replace the transom and floor. The owner was riding in his boat when he wondered why his bilge pump was running most all the time. When he pulled out the boat he found that the lower portion of the engine mount on the outside of the transom had punched holes in the fiberglass and everytime he would give it a little gas it would leak worse than when sitting still.
I just wanted to let people know that it can be dangerous to patch a transom from the outside or to run a boat with a rotten transom. They can rip off from the top or break thru as what happened above.
I see boats on the lake or on land that have steel bars and aluminum plates and every conceivable combination to try to hold a rotten transom together.
If you are riding around with a patched transom, I would encourage you to have it fixed properly or don't use it.
Don't let just anyone replace your transom and I would suggest it be done in a way that the floor and transom are connected together as a uni-structure in order to support the heavier new engines.
If you have had any experiences with rotten transoms please share on this post.
Thanks,
Houseboat
