It's no secret that the State Department employs some real jerks, who believe that theirs is the only opinion that counts. I've met a few who thought that they knew what was better for a country than the country did itself. It always seemed ironic to me.
I've always enjoyed sitting around talking to people that have been kicking around a region for a long time. They always have great stories, and an interesting perspective on things.
