Since 1902 the great clock in the tower of the Balmoral Hotel adjacent to Waverley RR Station In Edinburgh, Scotland has been intentionally set 3 minutes fast in the hope of making it less likely travellers would miss their train.  One day a year, Dec 31, the clock was set on the correct GMT so that the revellers at the official Edinburgh New Year's celebration which takes place on the surrounding streets could welcome the new year on time.  Today for the first Dec 31 ever the hotel will not be turning the great clock back 3 minutes to correct time...the management says that it is hard to imagine anybody in Edinburgh who would object to seeing 2020 exit 3 minute early.
