Anyone, other than myself, wonder why Lake Martin is only 3 feet down as of 08/28, and Wedowee is down nearly 5 feet. And keep in mind that we feed Martin, via the Tallapoosa.

dang i did't think any body else from wedowee would ever find this site
again.i noticed the levels .rumor is alabama power big wigs are on martin and they control levels to there benifit it .it sux i got to walk thru mud to get to boat in front of neigbors dock and then i have to push out
to deeper water to start boat but what can we do?

Probably a large part of the difference is the surface area of the lakes. LM is almost 5 times bigger than Wedowee, so a given volume or flow of water into it (or lack of flow in this case) will have a smaller change than seen on Wedowee.
In years with average rainfalls, the lake levels are regulated due to a lawsuit from LM owners back in the 1970s. They wanted to keep the levels up longer each year so they could increase the value of their land.
This year has seen below average rainfall, so APC is probably just trying to balance the levels as much as possible.
Good to see someone posts something here every now and then. Hope to be down by Wedowee again a a few weeks.

I realize that Martin is larger; I have a brother with a home on Martin, and we do talk often about the differences. I've been on Wedowee for 4 years now, and based on my research, Wedowee historically begins to drop their water level in mid August. Martin holds until past Labor Day. It does take a large amount of water to make any change in the water level at Martin, which Wedowee cannot lose, especially during a drought as we are having now. We would just like to see the level remain until Labor Day. The local business's suffer dramatically from the lack of people on the lake, as most homeowners on Wedowee are not permanent, and pack up and leave once the water drops. Alabama Power wants no part of this discussion, because they have yet to prove juctification for dropping the water level so early. They could care less if the small towns survive or not. Anyway, just airing frustration.......will spend Labor Day at the beach instead of my lake home.

i've been going to wedowee for 15 years ,and it seems to be getting worse every year.In spring when the water came up from winter pool it
jumped 8 feet in 30 days with litte rain ,but the last 2 weeks storms have
pounded the tallapoosa river area and lake wedowee ,but it only pauses
the steady drop for a day . martain has slowly been recovering from their
levels i think to our expence. i bet if martin reached full pool wedowee
would suddenly shoot up. just my two cents

The only way to get attention to the problem of the water level, will be to let anyone interested in property on Lake Wedowee, know that we are only full pool 3 months out of the year, and Alabama Power doesn't want anyone on the lake from Labor Day on. Check the Birmingham News for current lake levels in Alabama, and Lake Wedowee has the largest shortage from full pool than anyone. Alabama Power is trying to sell property on the lake, and if we convince potential property owners to go elsewhere, they will not be happy, not that they really care. Anyway, my permanent home is in Ga., and I'll spend my money in Ga until it improves.

Exactly my point....
LM level has to stay within certain limits as decided by a 1970s court case. Ever wonder why APC waited until after the lawsuit was resolved to begin construction on Wedowee Dam, even though it had been proposed decades earlier?
They can use the water from Wedowee to help in holding Martin at the lower end of the legal levels. Of course, during a drought or flood, it doesn't apply, but the definition is spelled out too.
I can remember Martin dropping on hot afternoons as much as six inches as heavy air conditioning loads came on and they used the hydro power for peak demand. I haven't been on it in years, so don't know about the current power generation scheme.

I believe as Lake Wedowee gets more home owners and a LOUDER voice, they will get Al. Power to listen more. One thing I would love to see is: Only lower the lake 4 feet enstead of 8... And if they could raise the water starting in Feb, so its Full Pool by March, and try and keep it up untill at least till 1st of Sept... I would think that would make most people on Lake Wedowee happy... If Reynolds comes to Wedowee, they will have a LOUD voice and that might make a difference... Does anyone know where Reynolds is looking at buying?
