That is an interesting list. Kinda makes me feel old. Like when pay phones became a thing of the past, and when it used to be a dime to make a call.

I was thinking one day about what changed in the workplace between the time I entered and I retired --

When I entered the workforce, no one had a computer on their desk. All computer work was done on key punch cards that were prepared by a keypunch operator and run in batches once a week. We didn't have email or fax machines. If you needed to know something, you had to make a call to a live person (no press "1", press "2") We still had secretaries that actually typed correspondence. Everything came in the mail and nobody expected a response quicker than a week. There was carbon paper and mulitiples copies. We had shared phones -- my office had 4 numbers for about 10 people. There were no cubes.
We kept our files in filing cabinets. There was no flex time, no compressed work schedule, and no cell phones or blackberries. We didn't even have an answering machine. Being available 24/7 had not been invented.
I doubt most people would be willing to work under those conditions today.
