See the paper below from a study of virus infections in a county in MA. Of the 496 new cases, breathroughs of fully vaccinated people accounted for 74% of the total with MA having around 69% vaccinated, a little h. Even worse, of the five people that had to be hospitalized, four were fully vaccinated and none died. 89% of the new cases involved the Delta variant. Did not read the details of the 5 that required hospitalization so don't know their age or the presence of co-morbidities. 79% of the breakthrough cases had symptoms. Note that this is a small sample size study so it could be contradicted by meta data that won't be available for a while but it does comport with studies done in Israel with much larger sample sizes.
So what this tells us is several things. One, the experimental gene therapy either isn't very effective with the Delta variant or the protection wanes over time. I saw a video of a UK doctor comparing breathrough cases in the UK versus Israel and it seemed to indicate that waiting 10 weeks or so after the first shot provides better long-term protection than getting the second shot in 3 weeks or so. Two, there doesn't seem to be any special protection against serious symptoms whether you have been vaccinated or not. Again, not knowing the demographics of those that required hospitalization it is hard to say whether there is a correlation or whether it could be a function of the circumstances of those individuals. Third, I can assure you that if this study is confirmed with meta data that booster shots are on the way for the fully vaccinated, as are masking restrictions, etc. Essentially the vaccinated and unvaccinated may be be at similar risk to the Delta variant, either due to being ineffective or wearing off.
