dangerous for either side. It is absolutely the case that economic events were overtaking everything else and that inures to the benefit of Democrats (I will spare you why this boggles my mind but it is a reality that Republicans just have to deal with). That surely is reflected in the polls. If you look at the Real Clear Politics average it has Obama up by 3% and way ahead in the electoral college. My guess is that McCain and his team saw the same with their internal polling and decided they needed to do something dramatic. Or its possible that he saw the economic situation and decided this was more important? The cynic will go with the former and the optimist will prefer the latter explanation.

This does place Obama in a pickle. What happens if McCain goes to DC, leads the charge to get a bailout plan in place, the markets respond favorably, etc. while Obama stays on the campaign trail? As Dick Morris said on the radio this morning, McCain would take the economy mantle away from Obama and this move, if successful, could end up in hindsight being the turning point. If Obama returns to DC he looks like a follower (which is really what he is showing us with his reaction to McCain's decision). He actually said, "I'll return to Washington if they ask me to." That is not leadership in my humble opinion. And who are "they"? Why does he need "them" to decide that trying to respond to the economic crisis we are in is actually more important than a debate.

I think either way Obama comes out on the short end of the stick. What would have been a better in my estimation was for him to act presidential and immediately get on board and say forget the debates, we need to be in Washington to do the work we were elected to do. Then he could be front and center in resolving the economic crisis and people will quickly forget that it was McCain's idea, particularly since the media will always play everything to his benefit. He can probably still do this, and I suspect he will come to his senses, but the longer he waits that harder it will be for the media to cover for his poor judgment and lack of political sensibility.
