A guided trip would be the ticket I think . Reed Montgomery and affiliates used to be the way to go around here and may still be . You could call or drop by the Fish Tales tackle shop on 280 south of Alexander city and ask them for a recommendation . Tell them up front that you are interested in instruction teaching technigues that he can use on on his own afterwards .You can probably book a trip with  a deposit that could be taken in the spring .

If I could only have one oufit to fish with , it would be a 6'6" spinning rod , medium power , medium action with a 3000 series reel . With that I could do pretty much anything from panfish to stripers . Sports academy in Opelika would be a good place to look for that and they have people that can help with selection .

The guided striper bait fishing trip woould no doubt be fun and they would make it possible for you to reel in some stripers . But as far as learning much you could replicate , I am not so sure , and they are , in my opinion , very expensive .

I am guessing you have a pontoon boat . If so  ,the easiset way to get started is to get the  aforementioned out fit and a few Bandit crankbaits and idle along with the lure trailing a 100 feet or so behind the boat .
