I knew of John Bolton when I worked in DC.  Mr. Tactful he isn't.  You may recall he was essentially fired from his job as UN Ambassador.  He tends to have a lot of opinions, which he expects to be taken as fact.  Keep in mind that his book is just his view of the way things were/are.  He left the Trump administration when Trump asked for his resignation - and that, I can tell you, would be a big blow to his ego.  

That's the thing with books - they are written from the authors perspective and how they saw things.  Doesn't mean it is true, doesn't mean it is fact, it's just one perspective.  I suspect if you are trying to sell books, your editor advises you to build up certain situation or conversations to appear more dramatic than they really were.  

Its like this videos that are being released.  The one where Trump says to Fire the Ambassador.  He had just been told that she was badmouthing him in the UKRAINE and saying that he woud be impeached.  Anyone as impulsive as responder as Trump is would say "fire her".  But it is rarely mentioned that she didn't get fired then - she wasn't fired for another year.  And we are not reminded that she was Obama's pick and not Trump's.
