I think getting back to basics is a good idea. Not "living off the land", but reconnecting with what is meaningful in life -- and it's not having the biggest house, boat or the luxury car. It's not bad having those things if one can afford them, but thinking that they essential to feeling good about life is what is driving our culture downward. So many people are spiritually deprived -- and I'm not necessarily talking about a religious belief, but that feeling of gratitude and well being when you wake up in the morning and feel glad to be alive. Worshipping at the alter of materialism doesn't get you there -- trust me, I have been to that alter many, many times, so I know what I'm saying. I love having nice things, but I never confuse them as being essential to my well being.
So maybe if we all have to cut back and bit, and think a bit before we spend, and remember there is a difference between "want" and "need", and remember that there is a comfort that comes with having a bit put away, then our society will get back on track.
This morning I took a walk with my dogs. What pleasure to hear the birds and notice the changes in the area as we inch towards Spring. I don't know of a single designer purse that I've owned that has brought me that much pleasure.
