I have a 12’ Basstender that is a heavy boat compared to most Jon Boats. It has a raised front fishing platform, livewell, bilge pump, etc making it even heavier than the average Jon Boat and I power it with an 8 hp – 2 stroke Mercury. It planes out just fine and will haul bu** once it gets on plane. I leave the boat at the water, but take the motor back and forth to my garage, so weight is a factor for me. I could not handle any larger motor.
