Stripes like deep, open water like the Kowaliga Basin or the main river.  They can be hard to find without good electronics.  Spots prefer deeper water than largemouths, and are often found on rocky points or cover on the main lake.  Largemouths prefer shallow cover like weeds and downed trees, and that kind of cover is relatively scarce on Martin.  They are usually found in the backs of creeks or piers set further away from the main lake.  Piers that have brushpiles under them can produce either spots or largemouths depending on location.  In the winter, the lake is clear and cold, with water temps in the low 40's, and most of the fish are deep.  The spots and stripes are more active in the winter than the largemouths.  As for crowds, only a few locals will be around between Labor Day and Memorial Day, so it is a good time to visit.
