I am glad to here that you are convinced that wood is still the best way to go when replacing a transom. I normally use marine plywood saturated with resin and with mat between all layers and on both sides.
The boat above that I used foam in is just a simple jon-boat. The transom had permamently mounted aluminum frames and brackets to hold the original wood in the transom. I did not want to remove the permanent brads that held the boat together to install the transom so I built a mold, waxed it and added shutes to pour in the 8# density foam. The foam is light as a feather but hard as balsa wood or harder. In the area where the small motor mounts (6" x 12") I removed the foam and replaced with marine plywood and fiberglass to make sure it would not compress under the motor clamps.
