We have a 1998 XL1200 that has some type of engine problem. Not sure if it us fuel related or lubrication/overheat.

In short my wife ran in some very silty water up in Sandy Creek (yeah, I know) and undoubtly got a lot in the engine. I went over to see what was happening and we got it out OK and had water coming out of the pitot tube on the side so everything seemed fine. She drove it back to our house (about 1.5 mi.) and no problems.

At this point I'm thinking we dodged a bullet. Anyway, the next day we took it out to pull our daughter on the tube (only going about 15mph) and after about 500 yds the engine died. It started right back up but would only go about 150 yds before dying again. By the way we never had an overheat indication and water was always coming out of the side pitot.

Upon arriving back at the house the engine did not feel excessively hot. I took it out a little later and it did the same thing only this time the starter locked upon trying a restart. For the weird part in 10-15 seconds it started fine. It did this twice as I got it back to the dock.

My question is could I have silt that settled around the cylinders overnight that is causing a hot spot but not really blocking water flow or do I possibly have an unrelated problem to the silt situation? Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated.

Also, if I have to take it in for repairs what are your thoughts on Montgomery Yamaha?

Thanks in advance for your input.
