It is interesting that Mayo Clinic in AZ dropped medicare patients. Medicare provides reimbursement which is lower than insurance companies and the dropping of coverage is all about money. Or, is it?

Medicare has three options for physicians to be reimbursed. I posted earlier that 4 of the Medigap Plans offer coverage for excess charges. Here is a description of the options available to physicians:

There are basically three Medicare contractual options for physicians. Physicians may sign a participating (PAR) agreement and accept Medicare's allowed charge as payment in full for all of their Medicare patients. This is the most common.

They may elect to be a non-PAR physician, which permits them to make assignment decisions on a case-by-case basis and to bill patients for more than the Medicare allowance for unassigned claims. Excess coverage under Medigap would pick up the additional charges.

Or they may become a private contracting physician, agreeing to bill patients directly and forego any payments from Medicare to their patients or themselves.

So, why didn't Mayo become a non-PAR provider and just bill for the excess?
I don't know but feel they may be sending a message in John McCain's home state against the Obama Health reform
