Would someone please explain how Medicare can absorb 500 billion dollars in cuts. How I that naive or is the intelligence level of a majority of the US Senate this low?

All you have to do is reduce the amounts that doctors/hospitals/DME providers are paid. You have now reduced the Medicare expenses by millions of dollars each year. The only thing wrong with this is that you are also reducing the number of Medicare assigned providers by probably millions per year. No need for "death panels" and the such, there will be so few doctors who will accept Medicare assignment. The morons in D.C. are preying on the idiots of this country when they say that they are here to help. It does not matter how many people are insured when the number of healthcare providers is so limited that you cannot get an appointment. If I offered boat repair insurance for $100.00/year, it would be a great price - I could do it (and make a healthy return) if I only paid $2.50 an hour for labor and only 10% of parts cost. Would Cathouse Performance Marine, Spookeay Marine or Clearwater Marine be doing my work? Not a chance, I would be getting any work I needed performed by Illegals Unlimited or Out of Ripple Today. The bad thing is that it is now our Government's choice.

I don't follow the healthcare reform news every day because frankly, it gives me a headache. I was very surprised to read the other day that a proposal was on the table to lower the age of medicare to 55... Now, I understand that has been dropped, but why was it even on the table when Medicare is so far in the red?

If they cut the Medicare budget anymore, no Drs. will take it. As I understand it, currently if you are not already a patient, some Drs. will not take you on once you are on Medicare.

There is no reason to think that what we get out of this health care reform is going to improve health benefits for any of us. The costs will continue to go up, no matter what they are saying now. My health insurance went up $23.00 per month for less coverage in 2010. And my per office visit went from $20 co-pay to $30 co-pay. And I'm in a group plan.

Hound, a headache is nothing compared to what this bill will give you if passed. The reason they went for the expansion of Medicare to 55 was because they had to take the public option off the table to get more votes in the Senate. It didn't work as the same people said no to that approach as well. Now we have several ultra-liberal Senators like Bernie Sanders (a self-identified socialist) say that he won't go for it without the public option. And now Pelosi is saying screw the Senate, the House is not taking the lead on this unpopular legislation and will wait on the Senate. Meanwhile Harry Reid is trying anything he can to get something that can pass to give Obama his victory, albeit pyrrhic.

One would have to ask the question why any of this government takeover of health care is on the table given the already well documented malfeasance of the current system. Just imagine if all doctors have to rely on government-provided insurance ala England or Canada. All our doctors will come from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. like they do in countries with socialized medicine.

You are right that this is not going to either improve care or reduce costs. It will do exactly the opposite. If you go back and examine the cost of health care you will see and incredible coincidence that costs began to skyrocket with the advent of Medicare, which was supported by half the Republicans in the Senate at the time. So much for bills being better when they have bipartisan support.

If you have friends in states with Blue Dog Democrats you should urge them to contact their congressman and Senator. Its our only hope...

That's what I'm hoping. That the ultra liberals sink this bill. It may be their only contribution.

Don't have any blue dog democratic friends. Most of my friends are Republicans.
