A group on Smith Lake wants to reduce the draw down on the lake and is meeting opposition. The same things we will battle if we ask for the a reduced draw down. Big one page ad in B-ham news. here link to opposing group.

I just read the ad - it was placed by the opposition and reads like making the changes would end the world. I sure do not know the details about Smith Lake but the opponents to change must have some very large vested interests to go this far.

Interesting, as whomever has registered the domain www.protectthewarrior.com sure does not want others to know who they are.

As the domain was registered through www.domainsbyproxy.com which is a domain name registration company which keeps your registration information private.

Rather interesting I would say. As if they are opposing such why not let others know who you are??? Sounds like a private interest group to me. Also notice on the website there is not info such as About Us or Contract Us. Do not think I would ever sign an online petition without knowing who was on the otehr side of the petition and what their motive was for such.

Just my 2 cents.

savelakemartin.com through a whois lookup shows the technical contact with email address, telephone number, etc. Took all of 2 seconds to find.

protectthewarrior.com was registered through domainsbyproxy.com thereby keeping their contact information private. As such, you have no clue who these folks are and what their interest is in opposing the rise in Smith Lakes winter water level.

That is, if you are going to oppose an issue let others know who you are and how to contact you with questions, etc. Instead of hiding behind a private domain name registration.

to be anonymous, but want the uninformed to think you are ""EVERYONE"" . Gee, who would be hurt the most by restricting continuous releases of Smith Lake water, but can't own up to it??

savelakemartin.com technical contact, Mr. Woodall, what exactly is his interest in this web site? Is he the proprietor, or the person who was paid for development/creation?

Could he, or would he stand to answer questions posed about content on the site?

While its not clear who is leading this charge, I would suggest looking at downstream industries and towns and you will find the source. I sympathize with their position in that they have certain economic interests in maintaining flow in the river. Property owners likewise have their personal and economic interests in keeping lake levels up. A high tide (or lots of rain in this case) benefits both parties and the food fight starts when a drought happens and one or both interested parties suffer.

This is exactly the same battle happening between the states of Georgia-Alabama-Florida. There's no easy solution other than lots of rain but we need to have an open mind that all the stakeholders have a legitimate interest. I don't envy the COE or APCO or whoever has to try to please competing interests.

It is an Alabama Power backed site, they just don't want anyone to know.A full page ad in the Bham News is not cheap, but Apco doesn't mind. Th ecost of the ad is in our power bill

The Smith reservoir dilemma isn't like our situation on the Tallapoosa River. Consider the differences for the respective watersheds for Smith compared to Martin and then add the continuous minimum flow requirement downstream of Martin at Thurlow Dam--no comparison on the Warrior River. Fortunately, the combined reservoir storage on the Poosa of which Martin is the biggie, can accommodate downstream demands much more readily than Smith which essentially stands alone to control water storage for the Warrior River system's downstream needs.

You are probably on the right track. Remember there's a steam plant south of the Smith dam that requires constant flow (from 80 feet down inside Smilth Lake) for cooling. APCo has resisted even talking about returning that water back to the lake, or changing over to air cooled like all their other steam plants.
