From Wicker Point Road, turn left onto Young's Ferry. Follow Young's Ferry until you see New Hope Cemetary on your right. About 200 yards after New Hope Cemetary, the road makes a sweeping right hand curve. In that curve, you will see a road to the left. Follow that road North (up the hill) less than 100 yards to the North end of the cemetary. This is where you will find the most damage (look for the loading deck from the logging. It is directly on top of the cemetary).

This cemetary is identifiable by the Sons of the Confederacy, but I do not recall the name, and do not have that information in front of me today. Most locals can lead you to it, and tell you more about it. I am told that many of the families whose ancestors are buried there have since moved to North Carolina, but still visit every few years.

It is very disheartening when you realize what is there, and what has happened to it.

URL: Link that probably won't work, but is worth a try

Not yet but, I plan to. Don't want to give away the time cause I don't want the drug dog to be alerted. Looking forward to this excursion. Will report back next week...... if I survive the mission.

Suggestions – night vision, intense white light, kevlar, hollow points followed by hard cast. Simple. Next mission?

I am told a gate has been placed at the cemetary. I have not been able to confirm this myself, so if anyone has, could you please let me know.

I wonder why a cemetary which has remained open for 180 years suddenly needs a gate?

A new gate is on the road just past the cemetary on the main road.

There are cemetaries scattered all over the piedmont region. ost logging companies have respect. Obviously some do not. This is Elmore County? Any idea who owns the land?

and it is in Tallapoosa County, not Elmore.

I have been sent some pictures taken 2 days ago that I will post soon. Nothing has been done to repair the damage, other than a big shiny gate being placed at the road.

I thought this area was protected because the eagles have been nesting there for the past several years. Did they lift that protection and are they now able to develop this ares?

There is a lady in Alexander City that is head of the DAR chapter. She has been working to keep the protection and identification of the cemeteries in the area. She has a massive collection/library of data. One of the magazine did a feature article on her a few years back. She could help with the info. I'm sure. FYI

I believe when they were removed from the ESL, the retrictions on habitat protection were also removed. I'm not sure that area ever fell under those restrictions anyway.

Now the red cockaded is another story altogether. Luckily, there has never been a report of a red cockaded colony on Russell Lands property, only on properties immediately surrounding and bordering Russell Lands.

this cemetary. If anyone knows her name or info, could you please post it here? Also, does anyone remember which magazine, or where the article might be located?

Thanks!

Her last name may be Scott and the road she lives on is Scott Road. I am sure the people @ the Alexander City Library know who she is. I know she is over the DAR Chapter for Alexander City.

They were removed from the Endagered Specis List, they are, however, still protected. It is still against the law to even possess an eagle feather.

any other bird of prey.

It is just as illegal to possess a buzzard feather, or hawk feather, as it is an eagle.

There are quite a few in our area now, and I believe Elmore County actually recorded a "nuisance" case stemming from an eagle in the Tallassee area. Not sure if, or how it was resolved, but it involved an eagle eating puppies from a breeder's pen.

I just didn't want folks to get the impression that suddently it was OK to hunt, kill, or harrass them. I didn't hear about the Tallassee case. That is interesting. One thing that puzzles me is why the current numbers and loxations are kept so secret by the powers that be. One thing is for certain, there are a lot more around than most folks realize. I have personally watched the DARE Park pair raise three sets of eaglets and they don't stray to far from home to make thier home from what I have read. One thing is for sure, human population does not bother them when choosing where to nest.

I believe it is a federal requirement but it could be a Florida requirement that no disturbance occur within 750' of an active bald eagle's nest. there are several subdivisions in Tallahassee that have undeveloped areas surrounded by houses. This is not an insubstantial requirement - if my math is correct that is 40 acres of land.
