That Obama should be spreading the work ethic that made this country great, rather than other peoples money. Give people opportunity through private sector job creation, rather than more hand outs and more government programs.

"spread the work ethic"? How exactly would you do that?
I understand your objection about taxation to create programs for more "government" programs; but, if you wanted to "spread the work ethic" exactly how would you go about it? I don't think just not increasing taxes really "spreads the work ethic".

You spread the work ethic by being a parent to your children, and setting an example to those around you. Score one for hound, the Government cannot impress ethics - just look at their own. They could however, cut back on all the giveaways to make it where more people have the NEED to work.

Through NO handouts ... job training, volunteer work, etc in order to get any governement subsidy. Clean parks, roads, etc. Make it time limited, offer classes they do on their owntime to qualify for better jobs.

I would even be in favor of programs that match dollars earned if they are investing their own effort to learn new skills.

Why is it I see Mexicans lined up at HD and Lowes all over Atlanta ready and willing to take any work they can get and you never see Americans? That is the difference in work ethic. They do not want a hand out ... they want to work and are willing to do anything to earn a buck.

When I need my yard cleaned up, pine straw spread, miscellaneous projects around the house that I am getting too old to do (or I just don't want to and use that excuse) then I ride over to HD and pick a couple of willing souls and they always do a great job. They are all wanting to get picked and don't even ask how much I will pay them. I am always fair and also buy them a good lunch.

As long as the government will give handouts for not working ... you will not get a work ethic like that. Believe me, I think we need more control of our boarders and would guess some or most of these are here illegally. But they are here because they are willing to work and know that americans are not and will live off the government or sit around and complain that the economy is bad.

I agree to some point. I do think a lot of the Mexicans are willing to work hard for money.

I don't know if you have kids, but how are you teaching your kids work ethic? Do you make them earn their cell phone, cars, IPODs or whatever else kids want these days? Do they have summer jobs? Do they do yardwork and chores?

I agree that people need to understand that things don't just come because you expect things to be handed to you. That you are responsible to work for things. But then I look at my nieces and nephews. Some of them are doing just great, but some of them have had so many career starts at jobs that they only work until it becomes too hard... like having to get up in the morning and being expected to actually go to work when you don't feel like it. My one niece is 10 -- she has weekly mani/pedi appointments, scheduled playdates and weekly trips to the mall.

I'm wondering what kind of work ethic is being taught to all those kids growing up with affluent parents.

As for kids ... have one but he is 24 now and out working. Because I had nothing as a kid, I probably went too far the other way with him. Although, while he had a lot it was in line with the surroundings in which he was brought up. He did appreciate what he had, he was made to save and work for extra luxuries. We made him pay for a small part of his college through loans so he appreciated his education and it was not free ... and not just to party (although he had a tough time with that concept).

After he graduated he lived home for a short period before getting transferred to another city and we made him pay some rent.

I will say, he has never been in trouble of any kind, we can not be more proud and even at his low income level he is a die hard republican conservative. And best of all ... he works for US Bank so he is going through this whole financial crisis. The bank loves his work ethic since they rarely see that in young adults anymore. I would like to think he saw that in me and it rubbed off that you get ahead through hard quality work.

Well, sounds like you should brag a bit. When I was working, I had some young people who were goal driven and had great work ethic; but, I also had some that wouldn't show up if it rained or if something more interesting was going on.
