How many people have their phone line hooked up to their DirecTV receiver? View the story about an Orlando installation contractor.

Someone told me that Dish doesn't mind your phone line disconnected but they charge a small fee for that.

I have Dish and they do not require you to have a phone line installed and will charge $5 extra per month as a service fee. The interesting thing is you can still order movies from the remote and they still show on the bill. Odd what it is for.

But they do wave the $5 if you have one of their more advanced receivers (HDTV) that allows you to connect your broadband internet to the receiver which actually gives you other benefits like video and programs on demand and many other features that make it worthwhile.

Since I only use cell service and the magic jack at the lake, but I do have DSL internet, I hooked up the broadband and it works great and save the $5.

If the receiver is not hooked up to a phone line, both Direct and Dish can download needed info from the satellite, but costs them extra money. As stated, Dish charges extra for this service but I don't believe Direct has an extra charge. This would explain why they would pressure service technicians to promote the use of phone lines because it would mean higher profits.
