I just came across a special IRS ruling for those who itemize that allows you to deduct contributions to Haiti relief on your 2009 or 2010 tax return.
To satisfy Martin it is IR-2010-12:
WASHINGTON — People who give to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
Taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision, enacted Jan. 22. Only cash contributions made to these charities after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, are eligible. This includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card.

You should give because you want to help, not because of the tax deduction .... that is how the right thinks .... Cheers
Because it does not matter about the tax deduction to those that can really afford it since above a certain income level your itemized deduction start to be eliminated. Guess you would not know that.

There was a 2nd collection at mass several weeks ago, specifically for the Haiti survivors.. I suspect the donations were generous and few of the donors thought about tax deductions..
