Obama drone joke: Was it offensive?
Everyone agrees that President Obama was funnier than Jay Leno at the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night. But this joke is inspiring some backlash:
"Jonas Brothers are here, they're out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans, but boys, don't get any ideas. Two words for you: predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking?"
"You have to wonder why in the world the president's speech writers would think it was a good idea to throw a joke about predator drones into the president's speech during the White House Correspondent's Dinner, given that an estimated one-third of drone casualties, or between 289 and 378, have been civilians," wrote Adam Serwer at the American Prospect.
"Let's be honest, fellow progressives, we'd be all over Bush if he made the same 'predator drone' joke Obama told last night," Philadelphia Daily News' Will Bunch tweeted.
Salon's Alex Pareene says the joke wasn't appropriate because Obama told it:
The joke mighta worked, and certainly would've been less offensive, coming from anyone else. It seems like a no-brainer that the people directly responsible for tragedies should not deliver jokes about those tragedies. That's why Mel Brooks can tell Hitler jokes and Germans can't.
Drone attacks in Pakistan have killed hundreds of suspected insurgents since early 2009 -- but they have also killed civilians and stirred up animosity towards the U.S. in Pakistan.
President Bush was pilloried for making light of the lack of WMDs in Iraq at the 2004 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Does Obama deserve similar treatment?

He didn't say "armed" Predator. An unarmed Predator is used for surveillance and intell and doesn't kill anyone unless it crashes on top of them.

As much as I dislike the man..... I think that people are wound entirely too tight these days. It was a joke, and even though he could certainly dispatch one - with cameras and Hellfires, it IS a joke (I hope). Like the great actor Foghorn Leghorn says - "I say it's a funny, son."

I agree. Some things are just funny, and in the context of being a worried Dad, I thought it was funny.
I think everyone would do well to recover their sense of humor.

Hound, as I read the post he was mostly pointing out the double standard regarding Obama versus Bush. There is no doubt in my mind that the airwaves would be filled with left wing nuts decrying his insensitivity if W had told that joke.
As for me I actually think the joke is pretty funny and don't really care about the President using Predator drones to whack the bad guys. I am all for it and am all for him using it in a joke. I do worry that this will only incite further hatred of America by Muslims worldwide as most of the targets of the drones are Muslim terrorists or insurgents. OK, I'm kidding about that last part.......kill them all and let God sort them out....and I obviously only mean the Islamofascists, not Muslims in general.
What is more interesting to me is the fact that almost every President I have ever heard at this dinner tells most of their jokes at their own expense. Both Clinton and W were very good at self deprecating humor. Most of Obama's jokes are at someone else's expense which is just not as funny and provides some insight into the Daily Show writer's perspective. There are tons of jokes Obama could have told on himself. Heck, even Joe Biden was funny with his teleprompter joke.

If it makes those on the right feel warm and fuzzy, the joke should not have been told and Obama should hang his head with shame.
Now, let's get on to the more imprortant issues like capping the oil well, helping the folks in Tennesee, and bringing the guy to justice for his horrible attempt with the bomb in New York. Sorta makes this tread seem rather trivial and foolish.

What happened to the agenda? It really is easier to dismiss as "trivial" any subject that is hard to defend - just compare it to some other unrelated bad thing. "Keep your eyes on my right hand...."

I was actually making a joke and could care less about whether the Messiah cheats on his wife or not. That is clearly the least of our worries with this guy. As for some GOP member's homosexual preference's, they should just switch to the Dem party. Being limp wristed is obviously a resume enhancer.....just take a wook at Bawney Fwank......
You can never be accused of hypocrisy if you have no standards. As for me, I'll take the party with standards even if some members don't always live up to them rather than the party with no standards......What's the old performance review joke.....sets low expectations and consistently fails to meet them!
