Subject:   Constitutional Convention
Date:   9/16/2010 8:00:22 PM

Governors of 35 states have already filed Suit against the Federal Government
for imposing unlawful burdens upon them.
It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a
Constitutional Convention.

This will take less than thirty seconds to read.
If you agree, please pass it on.
An idea whose time has come!

For too long we have been too complacent about
the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea
that members of Congress could retire with the same
pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted
themselves from many of the laws they have passed
(such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution
for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must
live under those laws. The latest was to exempt
themselves from the Healthcare Reform ... in all of its
forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical.
We do not have an elite that is above the law.
I truly don't care if they are

Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever.
The self-serving must stop.
A Constitutional Convention - this is a good way to do that. It is an
idea whose time has come.

You have been suckered punched again. There is no truth to what you have posted. Here is the truth: # Can members of Congress retire with full pay after serving only a single term? No. This is a long-standing erroneous rumor. # Are members of Congress exempt from paying into Social Security? Since 1984 all members of Congress have been required to pay into the Social Security fund. # Are members of Congress exempt from prosecution for sexual harassment? No. The passage of Public Law 104-1 (the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995, also known as CAA) made a variety of laws related to civil rights and workplace regulations applicable to the legislative branch of the federal government. Section 201 of the CAA specifically prohibits sexual harrassment (as well as harrassment on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin). # Did members of Congress try to exempt themselves from current health care reform legislation? No. This claim was based on the erroneous assumption that congressional efforts to establish a "public option" for health insurance would have required everyone (except members of Congress) to participate in a new federal insurance plan. The proposed legislation would merely have required everyone (including members of Congress) to have health insurance that met minimum benefit standards, and to that end called for the creation of insurance exchanges which would offer health insurance plans to those who could not otherwise afford insurance plans meeting the minimum benefits criteria. In fact, the final version of the health care reform legislation that was eventually passed in March 2010 stated that "Members of Congress and congressional staff" will only have access to plans that are created by the health care bill or offered through the exchanges established by the bill: (D) MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN THE EXCHANGE. (i) REQUIREMENT — Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are: (I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or (II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act).

Do members of the House and Senate have any perks that you don't approve of?
Is it worthwhile to have people in office for life? Do lifers do a better job than a one or two timer?
If it is worthwhile, how much protection should they have legally, financially, etc.? What is reasonable compensation for their service, and who should determine that compensation?

Just Philosophical questions - trying to see where you stand............

I am sure you and I are quite close on our views of congress. I fully support term limits and an independent commission that determines salary and perks. Remember, all those serving were at one time running to clean up congress and against those in office. Those that are running this year will, in time, become those we want thrown out. However, that does not negate the false statements that were posted by Lottie? Where do you stand on those lies that are being posted all over the internet about full pensions after one year and not being covered under Obamacare? Should we not expect, and are we not entitled, to the truth good or bad?

I am not sure that it is 100% clear that government employees pay SS like private sector employees. My understanding is they can self direct 3% of their SS as part of their "pension plan" that most private sector employees do not enjoy from their employer. Also, even the government web site says they pay SS in "most" cases. so it is not clear they do just like the working americans are forced to pay whether they want the program or not. SS ... like EVERY other government run program is bankrupt, corrupt, inefficient and not run as well as if it was handled through the private sector ... healthcare will be a similar disaster. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/international/article/0,,id=104936,00.html http://www.ssa.gov/gpo-wep/

GF

The information that I posted was from a friend who is also an attorney. I copied your response and sent it to him this AM for his critique. When I receive his reply, I will post on this forum.

For your information, I do not post anything on this forum that I know at the time of posting to be untrue. I do not think that you can make a statement that everything you posted on this forum was 100% true. Perhaps you need to go back to Webster and review the definition of a lie. Did you ever refer to  Bush as a liar when Weapons of Mass Destruction were raised. Has Obama ever lied?

(When you talk about truth like that, you open up even bigger philosophical questions that I got tired of thinking about a long time ago.
We are taught that we deserve the truth, and I still cherish the thought of an absolute, but human minds are frail and not up to this - that is where faith comes in. Remember Jack Nicholson's line,,,,

The truth is what they allow us to see.  I can't help but be skeptical when it comes to these people, as it seems as if everyone of them is elected not just to a public position, but to a social caste that is isolated from the rest of America. The money and power involved is astounding, even with local governments, much less the federal.
The only time they go home is when the power corrupts them to the point of obvious crime, or they lose the will to continue the ruse. Even then, none of them go back to work in Home Depot or teach 5th grade Social Studies.......
Even lottery winners sometimes end up penniless, but a government job and its perks takes away almost all risks of economic, social, and health misfortunes.

But my question still is this: Is that what we need in a government? A permanent class of people who can think for us, predict for us, and act for us? And should we subsidize their every want and need in the good faith that they will sincerely approach and accomplish their charge?

They just believe so much that isn't true.........

I don't ever remember anyone lying on the forum but we have all posted things that were not correct at times.  As for GF, anytime he presents an opinion we intuitively know it is not correct because he is a left wing nut.....relatively harmless and occasionally humorous, but never correct......at least in my opinion.
