Subject:   What the Santorum Iowa results mean

After reading a ton of analysis about Santorum coming from nowhere to essentially tying Romney I think the following explanation makes the most sense. Over the last several months we have seen Romney's numbers holding in the 20%-25% range while the other candidates have risen to the top and then after greater scrutiny having fallen back to earth only to see another rise. What seems to be happening is that the 75% of the GOP that doesn't like Romney are moving around between the other conservative candidates. So prior to Santorum the flavor of the moment was Newt. But after Romney and Paul spent millions on negative ads about Newt in Iowa his support shifts to Santorum and lo and behold he does well. So the real question is now that Santorum has shown legs will they also whither when he is attacked by Romney and possibly the others in NH and SC? And if he likewise whithers will some of that support finally drift to Romney? I know it won't go to Ron Paul because he is a nut. Bachman/Cain/Pawlenty are out and Perry is on his last legs. Huntsman is not even on the radar screen. Who's left for those unhappy with Romney to support. Gingrich again? One thing is very clear to me. The Obama campaign team really wants to run against Romney. I think they really fear a more certain conservative because the contrast will be stark. With Romney you gets shades of gray.....or they can argue he is Obama-lite or whatever.

It shall be interesting to see how Gingrich does in the SC primary. SC could end up supporting Perry and Gingrich from the South. I still expect Romney to run against Obama and the big question will be how far to the right does he go for his VP running mate to make you and the wing nuts happy. Maybe, a Romney/Santorum ticket.

An interesting Romney video which makes me wonder how my Forum buddies on the right could support him.

If Romney is the eventual nominee, let me begin to count he ways I will support him -- Money Time Precinct Chair GOTV and every other way possible. Substitute the name of any current, except Dr. Kookoopants, or as yet unknown potential challenger to the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, and the answer is the same.

Conservatives will support, and fully embrace, the eventual nominee. The less informed, self identified, independent's, will find some number of anecdotal reasons to cast their vote as Morning Joe suggests. I don't think Santorum can hold small/smaller government conservatives through the primary season. His record will be out for all to see, rather than having to search. His involvement in the Schiavo case will cause some turnoff, his support for Arlen works against him, then losing his seat in 06 by the biggest margin of any Republican incumbent, and, people will reflect on the frequency and depth of failures of the last senator elected to the White House.

I'm with Barneget on this one. Romney is not my cup of tea even though I did vote for him in the primary in 2008 over McCain. But I would take any one of the GOP candidates, including Ron Paul and Huntsman over the Messiah. And who cares who the VP is anyway? Oblamer got elected with an absolute dunce as a VP. And likewise for the first time in my life I am going to take time off from my business and work my backside off for the nominee regardless of who it is. And they will get the maximum amount I can give them. And I am going to try to be a bundler for them. GF, that is the energy and motivation you are going to see in 2012 from the GOP. What will be more interesting is whether the black community, hispanics and the union rank and file will be as motivated considering unemployment will definitely be over 8%, deficits will be soaring, EPA will still be out of control, etc.
