Interesting to see the two who are speaking out hve credibility on tax code. Maybe, out of all the recent IRS hearings will lead to reform.

"The Senate’s chief tax writers plan to scrap the entire code and start from scratch in their push for tax reform, and on Thursday they gave lawmakers a month to make a case for preserving some of the $1.3 trillion in breaks on the books.

In a letter sent to all 98 of their colleagues, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and his Republican counterpart, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (Utah), said they would take a “blank slatep” approach to the tax code that assumes the elimination of thousands of popular perks, including such sacrosanct policies as the deduction for mortgage interest, the child credit, and the lower rate for dividends and capital gains."

Let's see, Obamacare was 2,400 pages long and so far has 20,000+ pages of regulations that have been written.  The original Senate Immigration bill was 1,100 pages and the amendment was 1,900 pages with untold thousands of pages of regulations to follow.

I have zero hope that Congress either unilaterally of in bipartisan fashion can do anything simple and straight forward. The bill will be written by lobbyists and staffers that hope to make a killing either getting their favorite client's little perk in the bill or as a future lobbyist helping influence the regulations.  The only hope for meaningful reform is a flat tax that is simple to understand and follow and your return can be completed on a single sheet of paper.  That is never going to happen as long as the accountants and tax attorneys have such a strong lobby.
