They indicted the 20 year old for illegally accessing Palin's email account with possible 5 year prison term and $250,000 fine. Brought him to court in shackles.

Is it just me or does this seem excessive? What he did was wrong and he is an adult but it looks to me like they are making an example out of him. I suspect if he lived in San Francisco or the upper west side of Manhattan they would be giving him the key to the city but he lives in Tennessee. I can see disagreement with my view and generally I am all for punishment of criminals but this seems a little out of whack. I hope they can plea bargain, whack him enough to deter others from making the same stupid mistake and then letting him move on with his life.

We shall see how this all plays out. As I understand it his Dad is a straight shooter (as evidenced by comments made by Dems and Republicans in Tennessee) and probably is very distressed at what his son did.

A well thought out post that I concur with. There must be some punishment to deter others from hacking.

That's it, if GF agrees with me I just changed my mind and think he should be sentenced to death, then sent to Gitmo and forced to watch Michael Moore movies 24 hours per day! :-) Just kidding. Actually that last part might fit into the category of cruel and unusual punishment.......

I know he needs to be punished and it needs to be a deterrent but if just seeing the guy in shackles doesn't do it........ They need to show the video of this to every high school/college student so they understand the seriousness of hacking like this.

country club anyway. It will be like punishing a child and making them stay home with a video game, tennis, basketball, movies etc. but they just can't go to a friends house. This is our country club federal prison system. I say give him the full 5 years. He'll be able to focus on his education completely. When he comes out someone will make him a legend or a hero of some sorts anyway. He'll definitely find a job in the computer industry.
