2 arrested for hanging Obama effigy on Ky. campus
By ROGER ALFORD - Associated Press Writer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A University of Kentucky student and another man were arrested Thursday, accused of hanging a life-sized likeness of Barack Obama from a tree on the campus.
The incident was one of several in recent weeks involving effigies of the presidential candidates or their running mates. No charges have been filed in four other cases that have made national headlines.
UK Interim Police Chief Joe Monroe said the men "expressed remorse for a stunt that had gotten out of hand."
Arrested were Joe Fischer, 22, a UK student, and Hunter Bush, 21, both of Lexington. Both were being held at Fayette County Detention Center on charges of disorderly conduct related to the hanging of the effigy. They were also charged with burglary and theft at a fraternity house where police said the materials came from.
Lt. Tina Strange, a deputy jailer at the detention center, did not know who the men's attorneys were. She said they were each being held on $7,600 bond.
Monroe said the two men told detectives they decided to hang the effigy after seeing media reports about a Sarah Palin effigy in California.
Witnesses who saw the effigy Wednesday said it was life-sized with an Obama Halloween mask, a suit jacket and sweat pants. It was found hanging from a tree with a noose around its neck.
UK President Lee Todd said the effigy violates the university's code of ethics, and Fischer faces punishment that could include expulsion.
"As outrageous and offensive an act as the effigy was, I truly believe it has mobilized our campus, the community and the state in an effort to battle racism," Todd said Thursday.
It was the second time in about a month such an effigy was found on a college campus. George Fox University, a small Christian college in Oregon, recently punished four students who confessed to hanging a likeness of Obama from a tree.
Meanwhile, a Redondo Beach, Calif., woman removed a Halloween effigy of Barack Obama that was hanging from her balcony with a butcher knife in its neck. She took it down Thursday after neighbors complained.
In West Hollywood, Calif., a man removed an effigy of GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin from his yard Wednesday after several weeks of complaints.
And in Clarksville, Ind., a man had hanged an inflatable doll made to look like Obama from a tree. He took it down Wednesday, and authorities said it didn't appear to violate any state laws.

Big difference between hanging in effigy a Presidental candidate and a VP candidate. It is spelled out in the Constitution. Maybe, if you read it you would understand the difference. But, the Far Right likes to attacks the issue with cut and paste articles rather that a thoughtful process. Read the article and you will see that McCain has not been hung in effigy. Those of us who are progressive understand the Constitution and its relationship to the freedoms we enjoy in our great country.
Nauti, it is time for a CHANGE.

you are the sick one with the double standard. neither was appropriate and neither should have been allowed. But to arrest and fine one act and allowing the other to exist is truly biased.
You will probably get your liberal king, but they are running scared with the slip in the polls, FL moving to McCain and PA looking very close.

There IS a double standard in the hanging of Sarah Palin and John McCain in a pit of fire. I wrote to the press and said how would the people of California feel if they saw an Obama hanging from a tree and Biden in a chimney of fire in the state of Alabama? I can guarantee it would be a lynching of someone. It's the double standard. It's poor taste and tacky to say the least. I was glad to see the people of California take their Sarah down.
Look- the conservatives will except defeat if it comes on the 5th, but we will also prepare for the aftermath that will come within two years in office when all policies take place. It's called retirement, but for many it will be called the unemployment line. If McCain wins, you will see more jobs created, government will shrink, and power will slowly get back to the people. It will take a change in our state and federal government as well. So until the 5th I will continue to fight the fight and deal with the results!

I am currently still proud to be an american. I know Michelle Obama has said she has not for her adult life, which is sad. I am not sure I will be proud to be an american after 4 years of Obamanation. The good news is in 2 years we get to change congress.
I saw on CNBC this morning 3 individuals that have all said that if Obama gets elected and immediately tries to implement his tax policies as we are trying to fix the credit system and get the economy moving from the credit freeze caused by the sun prime mortgage crisis, that it could easily spark a severe depression.
The sad part is, I am not sure BO cares. That would feed in to his socialist agenda of bigger government and more people looking to the government for help.
If you look at what Bush took over from Clinton with the tech bubble bursting, then 9/11 ... he cut taxes and stimulated growth and created jobs. Things were darn good for 6 years. Then the Dems took over congress and look what has happen.

GF, what difference do labels make. The simple fact is that there was no media uproar when a mother of 5, governor, wife and VP candidate was humiliated and embarassed when hung in effigy. It hung in West Hollywood for THREE WEEKS!? Where was Obama condemning the act. For that matter, where has Obama been condemning the numerous character assassinations that have occurred by his press and his own campaign (see Joe the Plumber). It grieves me to think that an ordinary middle class American can have his private and personal life exposed for all to see, humiliated, taunted by the national press with not a wimper from people like you. For simply asking a question. I thought Obama stood for the middle class? Face it GF, he only acts like he supports them when he feels he can bribe you for your vote. Are you that easily seduced? Beyond the election, wait and see how much he looks out for you......
I've said all along that Obama is a mindless, figurehead for powers behind the democratic scene that you nor I know about. The mainstream media is not protecting Obama. He is a lightweight. They are protecting those standing in the shadows of an Obama presidency. It indeed frightens me to think that Americans can be this gullible to elect a candidate who is simply a mere puppet. I can imagine what is said about Biden. Say what you want about GB and Cheney being in corporate americas back pocket. It may or not be accurate, but I know two things......We have not been attacked in seven years and at least the repubs were transparent. Call yourself progressive, I believe America has gotten lazy and as a result, has gotten grossly naive. I genuinely fear for the America that my children will inherit if the extreme liberal establishment gets ahold of our executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

It's the statement that brings racism into this issue that makes me so mad. What makes this racist? Hanging potical figures in effigy has a long history. Was the Pallin effigy called sexist? If Obama becomes president will all the political satire that goes with the job be labeled racist?

The Democrats learned a lesson in 2004 when Swiftboat went after Kerry. He was slow to react and lost. This time the Democrats are taking no prisoners and running a campaign that is driving the Republicans crazy. You may not want to admit it, but it almost appears that Karl Rove is advising Obama this time around.
Hanging is dastardly and I am shocked it hung for that long in Hollywood. Why didn't the Republicans call Arnold or make it an issue??? It should have been down the next day. If it were my candidate, I would have had a bus load sitting outside the house until it came down. No place in America for that kinda of display.
