There is still an open question as to whether the Dems can get to 60 senators thereby having a fillibuster proof congress. Oregon just went D.............Alaska, Ga and Minn are open to recounts or a runoff it looks like. It would be interesting to hear what the opinions are here about this development. What say you??

The Founding Fathers never envisioned there would be one-party rule. The last two years have proven that the Democrats are no better at cleaning things up than the Republicans. If Nancy Pelosi has her way and if Obama has the opportunity to replace a few Supreme Court members, we will be on the most liberal track in our history.

Free healthcare for everyone, unlimited abortions, welfare returns, and the national debt continues to rise. And, they won't have a Republican to kick around and blame everything on any more.

How the majority could have elected more Democrats to Congress after the performance of the last two years is beyond me. One can only hope that BO remembers that almost half of the voters were against him and moderates his policies accordingly.

It is traditionally true that the mid-term elections favor the party not in charge, so perhaps if the next two years mirror the last two, the balance will swing back to a more Republican Congress in two years. Now that we have 'no excuses' for anything, Dems will have to take responsibility for what they do.

They elected Dems to the Congress because they are sending a CLEAR message to the Republicans that they want change. The majority of people in this country do not agree with the track that we are on. The Repubican party needs to realize that they need to move to the center where the majority of the country thinks if they want to be in office. I hate to tell you that the Christian Right Wing does not represent the views of the majority of Americans. And I think this election has shown that I'm right.

I don't know how you can blame the Democrats for the national debt. They have only had House majority for 2 years and the Republicans have been in control for the last 8. Do you think Bush's stimulas payments, and the Iraqi war might have had a bit to do with the national debt? And the bail out, although supported by both sides has left this country with our debt being held largely by people that we worry about -- Arabs and the Chinese.
People are looking in the wrong places to worry. If the Dubai or the Chinese decide to pull the plug, this country is going to be bankrupt. Don't take my word for it -- check it out.

It will be really interesting when Obama "reaches across the aisle" to get two or three Republican Senators to serve in his cabinet and a Democratic Governmor appoints a Democrat to replace the Republican Senators. It would be a win-win for Obama because if the Republicans so NO, he will be able to say he attempted; if they say yes the above will happen. Politics, ain't it great to speculate.

National debt is a joint venture by both parties. Dems took control a couple of years ago promising dramatic fiscal change. Hasn't happened. There should have been some improvement (don't you think?) in two years??? Now they have a firmer grip on Congress, yet their platform was based on more doles to the middle class and higher taxes on big business to pay for that. No fiscal cutbacks anywhere. Oh, well - yeah, BO is gonna stop the war in Iraq immediately and stop that spend. Even if/when that happens, he's gotta build up Afghanistan (sp) so that will offset gains from Iraq departure.

All I'm saying is that the Dems aren't going to cut spending - they never have before. The only way to reduce the debt is to spend LESS. Both sides of the aisle should be under some kind of law to reduce spending and the debt.

And yes, all the billions spent on this campaign would have made a good sized dent in the debt.

I must have been living on another planet, but i thought we had a democratic controlled congress for the last two years... so how would electing more creating change??? Everyone should know, Congress controls the $$$$, and to quote President elect Obama.. "we are in the worse economic crisis this country has seen in 70 years" ... so ask yourself... 1) who controls the money? (the democrats) and 2) how is this election going to bring about change (well we have just guranteed that there won't be any vetos from the white house)... Way To Go !

There was no mandate in this election ... BO won bt 2 million votes. That is a lot, but 56 million people wanted McCain. And when you consider the number of minority people that voted for the first time and were newly registered, that pretty much makes up the 2 million extra votes. There are a handful of states that he wone by 1-2% that could have changed the outcome entirely. This was not like the Regan landslide where he won 49 states and won by 15% on the popular vote.

Where do you get Obama won by 2 million votes?? Obama received 64.3 million to McCain 56.7 or a difference of 7.6 million. In 2004, Bush received 62 million compared to McCain 56.7. The Republicans lost 5.3 million votes from the 2004 election. Facts are Facts.

Maybe, if you learned to add and subtract you would make money in the market.

Come now, that is an interesting opinion... but not germane to the question I asked. I am looking forward now and not backward..............the issue is the amount of unfettered control the new congress may have. As you know the architects of our form of govt built in the 3 branches with checks and balances so as not tro have runaway governments. I've said on here and others have written elsewhere that a unified govt (regardless of the party) does not do well for the tax payers. Looking forward....before the fact...........what is the opinion of having too much unchecked power.................tryanny of the majority.................. in the hands of this incoming govt? There were after all 46% (?) of Americans who had a different choice. By the way.........my guy did not win........but my guy is now the Pres elect of the USA, I'm just in the loyal opposition camp, and hope that the Dems get it right, if not I'll work and send my money to Republicans in the mid term to bring more balance to the congress.

He WON and the Republicans lost seats in both houses on Capitol Hill. I think it's a message, and it's pretty clear. Now, you may not like the message, but it's the way most people outside of this little corner of the world think.
If the astounding majority of people agreed with McCain and the Republican party, than we would have President-elect McCain and a Republican controlled congress.

Look, I don't like Pelosi any better than you do, and I think she needs to shut up. But the Democratics are in control for the next 4 years and I don't think they can screw it up any worse than Bush has.

OK, since you asked an question, I have to say I agree. I don't think a party in the WH and as a majority in both Senate and House is necessarily a good thing. And I'll be the first to say that I think Pelosi is a nut case.
The last thing the US needs is anyone's agenda unchecked. It's always better when you have someone to slow things down, ask the pointed questions and really make you think about what you are proposing. One thing Washington proves time and again that it functions best with balance.
I would love to believe that everyone will reach across the aisle in a non-partisan way for the good of the country. And I honestly believe that if people had not got so ticked off with Bush, more Republicans would have kept their seats.
