President-elect Obama has already created confusion with a friendly governement with his "double talk". Maybe he will learn to be more clear when he talks with other leaders instead of his half-truths he has used throughout his political career. He can't vote PRESENT anymore. We all depend on him to deal with foreign governments in frank and honest "straight talk".

COPIED FROM AN AP ARTICLE:

Obama foreign policy adviser Denis McDonough said Saturday that Obama had "a good conversation" with Kaczynski about the American-Polish alliance.

"President Kaczynski raised missile defense, but President-elect Obama made no commitment on it. His position is as it was throughout the campaign, that he supports deploying a missile defense system when the technology is proved to be workable," McDonough said.

In a statement issued before McDonough's, Kaczynski said Obama "emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership of Poland and the United States and expressed hope in the continuation of political and military cooperation between our countries. He also said that the missile defense project would continue."

Sorry to say that I don't think that Obama created confusion. It's not all that unusual for a foreign leader to characterize the points of a conversation differently, as they use this kind of press release to make their own points, either with their people (may have to do with jobs) or posture for their neighbors.

Obama made "no commitment" but he didn't say that he would end the program. He said that he would delay the program until it's technology is proved workable. I am very, very familar with the program -- it has had it's technological ups and and downs and money has flowed very freely. It is also a major source of contention with the Russians. It's politically sensitive both here and abroad because of the jobs and the technology transfer it involves.

You can't read too much into comments following a conversation or a meeting. I've been at meetings with foreign governments and seen the following press releases -- wondered if they and I were in the same meeting.

So I wouldn't go tar and feathering Obama just yet. I can promise you that there will be more of this kind of thing to follow and will likely not be Obama's fault. If you could go back and look at press releases as Bush took office, I think you would see the same thing.

I am not anti-Obama; he is my President-elect and will be my President in January. I too have been involved in many “discussions” with foreign governments, mostly south of Alabama, and know how difficult it is to communicate so both sides understand what was “said” and what was “heard”. Even the quote in the article I copied could easily be misunderstood, especially without the last portion of the sentence “when the technology is proved to be workable” – if it was said and heard. The real problem is that they allowed this to become a media issue between two allies and the Obama spokesperson has publicly said a foreign president did not present the truth to his people – not a good start for a positive future relationship. I am also keenly aware of the transition from candidate to elected official rhetoric. You and I both understood Obama during his campaign when he said “people that make less than $250K would not see their taxes increase” but many people heard that they would get a tax break. We both understood when he said “people will have access to the same health insurance … congress has” but he did not say how much it would cost them or how the premiums would be paid but they will “have access”.

As I said in the original post – it is time to be careful and insure that what is said is the same as what is heard. He has never had to deal with this situation and certainly there will be some bobbles; I just hope they are few. Fault will not matter if it creates a divide between allies in the war on terror.

This is my final post on this issue because neither of us will solve this problem and I have had enogh politics. Now I am going fishing and boating because the leaves are beautiful and the fish are biting.

If you and other liberals had the same patience with Republican administrations. Not that I expect it.....

If you want me to be patient with Obamination you can just forget it. I was completely opposed to him from the beginning and I have no reason nor should I give him a break to "make mistakes" and "misspeak" or whatever. He will have no shortage of apologists on the left and with the mainstream media (redundant with on the left) and I am going to hold him accountable for every mistake he makes. You did with Bush and I will with Obamunism so get used to it.

By all means, have at it.

Just a comment, not necessarily aimed at you. The Republicans can continue to move to the right, and they will continue to be defeated. I understand that the South is very much to the right of center, but that is not where the rest of the country resides. Most people do not want the Christian Right Wing telling them how to live. I support the Right in their desire to live as they wish and to believe as they believe what is the way to live, but I don't want them legislating my life. You can stick out your tongue and call me a liberal, but there are a lot more people like me than there are people like you. I suspect that some of them even live in the South.

BO must learn to speak without a teleprompter or without an adviser talking in his ear. He's gonna be Prez, and I have to support him for the office - but he has to earn my trust and support. How he governs will determine that.

I'm very concerned with the articles over the weekend talking about how he will use Executive Orders to overturn stem cell research policy that Pres. Bush banned. The other EO mentioned has to do with drilling for oil in the U.S. and I would support that one. I do imagine that some of the folks against U.S. drilling who supported him based on his early comments against it, won't be too happy though.

All this talk about Obama and teleprompters. I am quite certain he will do better than this without a teleprompter.

You've always gotta throw up something about Pres. Bush, don't ya? I wasn't comparing them - I was talking about BO. I've never before seen a Presidential candidate who couldn't ad lib to some extent. That's all I'm saying. Your guy won...whoopie. You don't have to defend him from every little comment. Better grow some thicker skin real quick, GF - cause it ain't gonna get any easier with time. Hasn't for any President before him - see no reason to give him a free ride.

The posting was about executive orders and the ability to change policy without going through Congress. Not BO-specific, just a comment.

I was just trying to establish a baseline that we can use to see if Obama improves as he becomes President Obama.
