At the risk of being flamed, cussed, executed, etc., I must rehash this topic. After 4 months of unmitigated he!! with Charter, first cable, then internet, I have finally had my service turned off. When I have time, I would love to share my story, if for no other reason, just to defame this joke of a company. However, in the mean time, as I sat in silence last night and started doing research, I am totally confused as to what way to go. I really just want basic TV service however, I do want the local channels whether it be Montgomery or Birmingham, I don't care. Which is better, Direct TV or Dish Network? Also, I need DSL. I am on the lake with a Dadeville address near Chuck's Marina. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Can't imagine why you would be flamed, etc., except perhaps from a Charter person. We have Charter cable, and after the initial tough situation getting them to install (took several trips to the lake and waiting each day for hours and hours before they finally showed up and actually DID something), it works okay. Their internet never did work for us, so we gave it up and got BellSouth (since we already have their landline it wasn't an issue). We have friends who have Direct TV and love it. Also, for your internet you might consider getting a Sprint or AT&T card for your PC...that works for friends in our area also.

Can I get local channels with Direct TV? Does AT&T service my area? To have my internet installed with Charter, it took 3 round trips from Atlanta. The first trip, no show. Second trip, they brought a cable box to install cable TV at 5:15. They were supposed to be there between 8 and 12. I politely explained that I have had Charter Cable TV for 5 years and that I had asked for internet. Charged me $35 for an installation just the same even though they did nothing. Third trip was a charm but, never could send emails. Also, I signed up for the $14.99 deal but, they kept charging me $44.99 so, I finally said screw it. I owe them $300+ and I sincerely hope they try to collect. I told them, if they would like their modem back to call me to set up an appt. I will tell them I will be at home sometime between 8 & 12. If they miss me, tough luck. Charter Communications- Has there ever been a better example of an oxymoron?

I have Dish Network and I LOVE it!! Don't know how I ever did without the DVR. Do not have internet with them, but my local (Montgomery) chanel's run me $5 + - per month. The tech even came out on a Sunday to install so I would not have to miss work. I pay around $44.00 per month with local chanels for the packace they call America's Top 200. That covers 4 rooms, 2 with DVR, and the first month was free.
I'm sure there may be people out there who do not like dish, but this is my second experience with them and I have only seen ther good side.

It is my understanding that you can get local channels with Direct TV, but I don't know that for sure. Your experience with Charter was an exact replica of ours, how odd is that? And, they had contractors come out to do the install - they knocked the box off the building and barely secured it back again, didn't have the right things when they came, etc. It is crazy. However, since they did get it installed we haven't had any issues to speak of.

I'm fairly sure that AT&T is the phone company of record in your area. All I did was call them (or maybe I went online) and ask for internet. They mailed me the router and install disk. I had it up and running in 15 minutes. I added a wireless router to the box (got it from Best Buy for about $25) and it's great.

All my other stuff, personal and business in Atlanta is with AT&T but, I don't think they have internet at my lakehouse. Think I'll give them a call.

Do a search under Direct TV as there is a good thread from Sept on this topic. Good luck.

We had bad experiences with Dish Network. Therefore, we went to Direct and the service has been great.
