I can remember when there was only 3 makes of outboard motors for boats (Mercury, Evinrude, and Johnson), unless you wanted to also imclude the Western Auto brand "Wizard". Now there seems to be many more makes available. Of all the different ones, which one would you (boat owners) recommend as far as reliable (maintenance-free & trouble-free). I was pondering whether or not to include in the query, economical. But I do not think that marine technology has arrived at the point of having a vessel wih the capacity of 30+ mpg yet.

Depends on engine size needs and where you will use it but overall, I'd recommend Yamaha. Lots of choices. Yamaha is a great choice for both salt water use as well as lake use. Again, depends on what your needs are.

Not looking for speed. Something that can achieve 25-30 mph. To go on aluminum "Bass Tracker" type boat. Crankability a must. Do not want to have to tote along a tool box with spare carb and spark plugs to get to start.

You should be able to determine the engine size rating for your boat by the certification labeled on the boat. That will determine your max. engine size. Don't undersize because you will end up with less fuel economy than by going with more HP. Don't worry about what top end speed the boat will go. You really want what gives you a good cruise w/o the engine overworking and using more fuel.

I had a Honda 150 which is a super motor. I have a 225 Yamaha which is also a super motor. Both are 4 stroke engines. You need to find out if the boat can handle the extra weight of a 4 stroke as Honda only makes 4 stroke engines.
The next question is carburator or fuel injection. Alot depends on your wallet. A 4 stroke is the way to go if the boat will handle the weight and your wallet will handle the cost. You do not have to mix the oil with the gas as you do with a 2 stroke and the motor is extremely quiet and does NOT smoke
like a 2 stroke which burns the oil and gas mixture. Mercury makes a great engine in both 2 and 4 stroke. Johnson/Evinrude have some good motors as well. The bottom line is they are all reliable and you can't go wrong with any of them. With that said, I would suggest you buy the extended warranty which carries it out to 5-6 years.

I have a 2006 4 stroke 115 HP Yamaha and LOVE it! I would NOT buy a 2 stroke!

I have a Yamaha 150 hp 4 stroke on my pontoon and love it. If I were looking for a motor for an aluminum bass boat, I would get an Evinrude E-Tec. The hi-teck fuel & oil injection make it quiet & smokeless. The big advantage is it weighs a LOT less than a comparable 4 stroke (Get out of the hole faster). See below link.

Yamaha or Honda 4-Strokes. Mercs are junk. Don't let a merc owner talk you into one. Johnson/Evinrude have bee good years ago but after the FICHT fuel injection nightmare I would hesitate to purchase even if they no longer utilize that technology.
