NCAA announced $60M fine, elimination of Paterno wins going back to 1998, no bowls. loss of scholarships, etc. I lived in Dallas when SMU was given the "death penalty" by the NCAA and the program has never fully recovered.
From everything I have seen about this case it may be deserved. Pretty awful decisions by the administration and coaching staff at PSU.

I think the school would be better off to try and find transfer spots for as many players as possible, and then shut it down for two years. Of course, that would suck for any schools on their schedule. Almost no way to find a replacement game at this late date.

When people in power have knowledge that young boys are being abused by a football coach employed by
Penn State, and take no action to stop the abuse, penalties should be severist the NCAA can impose. These seem
appropriate from my viewpoint. I would not be surprised if some who knew of the abuse are not criminally charged.

This is a critical part of the penalty. "Penn State players will be allowed to transfer immediately and be eligible elsewhere." There is no way they will be able to field an effective Division 1 Big Ten team over the next few years. It is too bad Paterno passed before the penalty was assessed.

Agree that Paterno should have seen his dynasty taken down. How could anyone continue to even be near someone who they knew was doing those things, much less continue to work with him. IMHO that makes him as sick as the perp, maybe even worse. Sandusky obviously is mentally defective, Paterno was just an egotistical b@stard who put his program and legacy above the welfare of the kids. Now he has the legacy he deserves.

Paterno actually did follow university policy and procedure when he reported the incident. The harshest judgement normally goes to the highest in command. I think the innocent victims here are the athletes that will have their lives and education disrupted. They won't have much of a team in a year or two. I hope the NCAA will accomodate the players. Also probably the other sports will suffer too since the football program contributes heavily to athletics overall.
There is really more here than just an athletic program gone askew. These universities and academia in general have so insulated themselves from the real world that they think the rules just don't apply to them. They have become a "Royal Class" just like the political class has.
The real crime is all these poor kids are leaving school saddled with debt. Just like the subprime fiasco once the government started underwriting student loans and the money flow started, the cost of college not only went through the roof but the facilities became palatial. The money flow from the taxpayers allowed the "Academic Class" to raise tuition and go on building sprees. Have you seen a "dorm room" lately? Won't even mention the "benefits".

All valid points ric, but surely you don't think anybody but paterno was at the top of that food chain. He could, and should, have pushed the issue, but he chose to bury it for his own agenda.
But I agree wholeheartedly about the rising cost of tuition and the palatial buildings being constructed and the salaries and benefit packages handed out. A few years ago an AU student showed me where the salaries are published for the school. It is public record, but buried very deep in their website. He had taken time to ferret it out. The real shocker was that the Engineering school had the highest salaries. But it makes sense since they are constantly generating revenue with new patents.
Also read recently that Harvard has an endowment worth 1.6 Billion, but gives out very few scholarships. 1.6 billion in the bank, but steady with their hand out to the taxpayers for more. Makes perfect sense to me.

You are so wrong. 1.6 billion is peanuts. Harvard endowment valued at $32 billion as of June 30, up $4.4 billion (16 percent) from $27.6 billion a year earlier. These are big numbers.

Paterno should have been fired but somebody over him should have gone to jail. These guys don't live in the real world. They think that this university world abides by its own rules. Firing a president and board members doesn't even do it for me. Some of them should serve time for what they didn't do.
Seems to me an awful lot of kids are going to suffer for something they had no involvement in. Like the gun control issue football is not the problem...people are.

Now that I think about it seems like the 1.6 billion was a drop due to some recent stock dip. But thanks for clarifying. Now I certainly understand why they can't afford to give scholarships.
But I am really impressed with your research abilities, seriously. I guess you have lots of time to kill while waiting on your next guvment check....lol.

I guess what astounds me is that many folks see this as a football program problem (The NCAA surely does) and it's not!. It's a cultural problem at the universities...It's a larger issue and Penn State is not the only one with this problem.

The Penn State problem is not about football but your question is interesting.
My take is the Auburn and Alabama football thing is beyond normal rivalries for whatever reason. Being a UGA boy I don't have enough background to make a judgement on that. The appropriate perspective on that I'll leave to Alabama folks.
I can tell you this though... In Georgia the UGA -Tech rivalry stuff usually ends after the annual event. An old friend of mine who was a huge Tech fan died 3 weeks ago. He would make a bet with me every year. (He ended up owing me about 20 cases of beer :-). I had the privelege of honoring my friendship with him at his funeral. Friendship, not football was the most important thing between us.

I am not a native of Alabama, but after I retired from active duty I was informed that since I chose to live in the state (as opposed to Uncle Sam's flying service deciding I should be here) I had to choose sides. Since my son and a fair amount of our money went to Auburn we chose the Tigers.
To be honest, the amount and type of hate and vitriol on both sides of the Auburn-Alabama rivalry is downright shocking. Otherwise sane people border on the insane when it comes to the other side. And its not just rednecks who have never stepped foot on a college campus. The madness extends all the way up the socio-economic chain.

will be paid to Sandusky. Lore is that inmates don't have much affection for child molesters since many of them were molested themselves. The prison may have to work overtime just to keep Sandusky from getting his justice.

On this subject...How about a teacher in the English department who has an assistant that molests children. Let's take away all the English scholarships for future students and reduce funding for existing students but allow them to transfer to other schools. Makes as much sense....
