Subject:   Floating pier replacement - recommendations?
Date:   11/25/2012 11:31:17 AM

I need to replace our floating pier and would appreciate any recommendations for folks that might be best choice to use for this in the area.

Just need to replace wooden floating pad, currently 12'x16', may go a tad larger. In the Susannah Slough area and would like to get this done before water comes back up. Definitely need demo of existing float before water comes back up.

Thanks in advance!

First of all if you replace the existing floating dock with a new one you will need to get a permit from APCO. Below is the guidelines for docks so based on your dock size you might be limited in the square footage of your floating dock. Mine was limited to 300 sq ft. because of the size of my existing dock. We built our floating dock and it took four of us all weekend, but it was designed by a Ga Tech engineer so it was probably over designed. Not sure if this is the info you were looking for. If you are looking for plans you can get them on line. Just do a search for floating dock plans. That's what we did. You can get all the materials at Russell in Dadeville. DOCK SIZE: The total allowable square footage for Structures (floating dock, boathouse, wet slip, boat slip, walkway over 6’ (wide) is 1510 square feet. Structure shall not exceed 50 feet in length. Piers 6 ft. and less in width are considered walkways and will be included in length but will not be included in the square footage guideline. Covered (roofed) structures must be open and cannot be walled or enclosed; however, a portion of one exterior side may be walled for the placement/construction of an approved storage area. Sketch should show if covered (roofed) and dimensions. Non reflective materials must be used. No habitable fixtures are allowed. With regard to the construction of and remodeling of floating structures, flotation shall be encased or closed cell (extruded) expanded polystyrene of good quality and manufactured for marine use which will not become waterlogged or sink when punctured. All beaded foam material being replaced shall be removed from the reservoir and properly disposed of. FLOATING DOCK(S): Floating dock(s) attached to a stationary pier should not exceed 12 feet beyond the stationary pier. Total length of dock and floating pier shall not exceed 62 feet. If the floating dock is to be built with a walkway instead of a stationary pier, the dimensions and lengths will fall under the dock size category. Must use approved flotation (see below). Certain restrictions may apply according to seasonable water levels.

Thank MM - that's great info. Unfortunately I recently moved out of state or I'd have already done this! Just realized the extent of the need on a visit over Thanksgiving to the area, and can't get back in the next couple months.

I do appreciate the heads-up on limits. I know I'm just about there, since we have a relatively short shoreline.

If it's going to be built on site, I always use Feb. 15 as a deadline date for completion.  Depending on the rainfall, you could loose your beach area in a weekend.  Also, next year is 2013 and we could be under a new water level guidline.

I did an exact replacement of my floating dock two winters ago and when I called APCO, they told me I didn't need a permit if I was just refurbishing the unit and not adding to my existing permitted structures.

Check with them first as things may have changed since I did my refurbishment.

Thanks Zman - good suggestion. I'm lucky enough to be friends with one of the APC contractors who does shoreline inspections and will ask him about my options.
