Lots of people use a couple of layers of landscaping cloth. That's the cloth that is used to prevent weeds from growing in flower beds. You can find large rolls at many building supply stores. Lowes and Home Depot have it but it'll be much more expensive, I think. If your sea wall is wood simply tack it to the back side in a couple of layers and it should work well.

I do seawall every year. I use a heavy cloth designed for that. I have a small peace left over. give me a call 334-850-6577. or you can buy at Russell in dadeville, or Eclectic.

I'm about to put in a rip rap wall, could somebody tell me why a fabric barrier is the recommended way to do this? What does it accomplish?

The fabric will keep dirt from washing out through the rip rap or seawall and keep weeds from growing through, but will still allow water to flow.

Since the rip rap will just keep compacting as dirt washes out, does the fabric have much of an effect? I'm thinking about the conditions of a moderately large rock barrier, not a small one..... which I can see would definitely benefit from a fabric underlay.

You have to consider that rip rap is not impermeable to water - you will have water in the rocks when the lake level reaches the wall. I would think that the fabric would be a cheap but advisable expense to add before you end up restacking stones and potentially dropping a pair in the process.. ;-)

even think about the rip-rap unless you use the fabric. The rip-rap will just slide into the lake. And when you use rip rap you will have to do repairs to it every few years or so even if it is propertly installed. I'll bet APCO has some experts that would give you some pointers.
