Last May, Wood's Island caught fire and burned for 4 days before it was reported.

Well, folks, the island is on fire again and this time, we did not assume it had gone reported.

Not so this time. We have called 911 and reported the island is on fire again. We are not experts, but as dusk falls, our assessment is that the fire is more widespread than last spring, likely fueled by the sustained winds we experienced thru-out the day.

Just thought concerned citizens would like to know.

Confused, but not this time. That bad boy is on fire.

It's an island. Does it really matter? I am not aware of any of the VFD's having a fire boat with which to fight it anyway. I enjoy Woods Island and I don't see where any harm is being done as long as it is underbrush and not the trees.

And to answer the other post, it is right next to Young's Island across from Bay Pine Marina, DARE Park, Smith Mountain area.

Last spring it took out a lot of the pines.

I don't see the harm either, i am just reporting it as was not done last spring. Then, someone took action to prevent the wholesale ruin of the existing vegegation.

Confused, again

I'm glad it's on fire. Maybe it will burn up some of the trash that all those rednecks leave behind!!!!!

We tried to clean up the camping side of it during last year's Lake Clean Up. The underbrush fire exposed trash that had been collecting for years. Grills and literally thousands of broken beer bottles that were thrown into the underbrush by thoughtless campers. It's dangerous to walk in the area because of the glass. Makes you wonder.
