After last year ... and the lake dropping close to 6 feet below winter pool, this year looked hopeless. I was just hoping the lake would get high enough to have a few good weeks of enjoyment this year and then possibly recover next year.

Well with a little help from mother nature and the great lake level management at Alabama Power they started to bring the level up in December, then in January we picked up 1.5 feet, but were still 3.3 feet "below" winter pool. But then in February the lake came up 7.6 feet (amazing), and anothe 5 feet so far in March. While we are technically not at full pool, it sure feels like it and the beauty of Lake Martin is back.

I am especially happy for all the businesses that depend on the lake for their living.

Happy boating and God Bless.

It is so funny how the attitude towards Alabama Power has changed since the lake is once again at full pool. People where complaining that Alabama Power was the worst company in the world and that they had all these corrupt motives for dropping the lake last year. Now they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. News flash!!! - they could give a rat's @ss about what we think of them this year or last year.

Right on the mark there PF. Our recreation is of NO consquence to APCO, but boy those were 'fightin words' last year.

I completely disagree. I am a serior executive at a company in Atlanta and one of the powers to be from Georgia Power is on our board. I was talking with him last week and commenting on how nice it is that the lake level is up and they are limiting power generation. He shared that less than 1% of power they generate is hydro. It is mainly used for peak demands and to regulate the flow in to the rivers so they generate power when they need to release water.

He said he sat in many meetings as part of Southern Company where their primary goal this year was to get the lake levels up no matter what. I think if you look at all Southern Company lakes you will see they are working toward full pool.

He had no reason to lie. They understand the importance of the lake for recreation as well as flood control. Power generation is a much smaller objective today. They are being good community citizens. I don't think we should bash them. Last year no one thought the drought would be so bad and they could not recover quick enough, then the water battle and required releases tied their hands.

Sorry, I must correct myself. One person does give a rat's @ss.

APC could care less about what the home owners think. I would like to know what APC. spent on this boat ban bill and if any of the stockholders care. The stockholders(that don,t live on the lakes) should be asking why would APC put all the time and money in this lawsuit. As a stock holder can anyone find out how much has been spent and how much more money APC is willing to spend on this.

I'm a stockholder, but no one from the company has asked my opinion about the lake, the lawsuit, or anything else. I get a fat dividend from them and the water in front of my place is both pretty and deep. Heck, I'm quite happy with Southern Company and everyone else. The world is too pretty right now to engage in bad thoughts.

I agree that APCO has done a great job this year. I don't know who is to blame last year, but they did a great job and people need to stop looking for conspiracy theories.

I would begin with the Corps of Engineers as:

1) APCo requested a downstream minimum flow variance I believe in June, Corps said needed more time to study such.
2) The Corps was allowing Allatoona to hold back more water than was legal. This was changed in mid July after brought to Corps attention.
3) In I believe in Sept, APCo finally had enough of the Corps bureaucratic BS and told them they were going to reduce the downstream flow and if the Corps did not like it to bad.
4) In October APCo sought a variance in this years Winter Water Level. In mid Nov Corps Approves APCo variance.

May not have all the above dates right, but they are close. So If you want to blame anyone I would say the blame begins with the Corps of Engineers. But then again last year was an Exceptional Drought.

During all this the Lake Martin HOBOs were firing off letters and making calls to the Corps, Gov Riley, APCo, AL Delegation in Washington, DC, State Lawmakers, etc. Not saying the HOBOs made this happen, but at least somebody was trying to bring this matter to the forefront. As without Gov Riley and APCo's intervention we most likely would not be where we are today. As at one point last Fall APCo was projecting the water level could drop to as low as 464, if I am not mistaken, and the low point was 474, I believe.
