Mercury Vapor............your problem could be the photo cell if you are using that to switch it on.

No photo cell. I ran it about 1 1/2 hours last night and went to turn it on tonight but it did not come on. A Mercury Vapor fixture is $114 at Home Depot. any suggestions. ? I will take it out tomorrow and see what happened?

Hi JIM, Hope you are doing well. I also remember the colman lantern, and I thing it is still in my junk pile I just moved from Virginia. LOL
I think the big difference is with the underwater light, you do not have to swat mosquitoes quite as often. At least, I hope this is the situation.
On the other hand, it is a little harder to move the underwater light from source to source. Although once again, there are portable units available.
With the current economy, we all may need whatever resource to harvest food. The question is can we afford cooking oil?

You can but a 175w mercury outdoor fixture from Home Depot for $25. It is the same docklight you see all around the lake installed on docks. You can but that light and use the parts. It has the photocell, ballast and bulb. In fact you can just mount that light and take the light socket off and put a cord from the light to the bulb and there you have it. A green monster light for $25.

Make sure you have it on a GFCI receptacle or it could be a shocking experience.
Also the light will float if not weighted down.

12V DC underwater lights are sold at Academy for under $20. Where AC is available I use a battery charger as a power source, and in a boat, I use a battery.
