At one time (and probably still the case) there were laws preventing the release of domestic animals into the wild. Domestic animals included normal farm animals and pets, along with native wildlife raised and bred in captivity. Changes were made for hunting preserves (re: quail, etc.). As far as I know, no migratory laws were changed.
Now getting to the crux, how can someone have the wings of mallards, and some other type of duck, clipped and release them into Lake Martin?
Of the ones released, 5 are still around. The others were probably eaten by predators.
Supposedly, the person that did this is feeding them and I guess he thought they would stay at his place. (Well, they don't!)
So besides goose poop, we have duck poop to dodge.
My experience with domestic ducks on a lake is not good. When the water goes down and there's not enough vegetation for food, and the "feeder" slacks up, those things are going to end up in every flower pot on every porch around. They will also get into any bait containers left unattended and anywhere else they can find something to eat.
So, if you know of anyone doing this or planning to do it, they need to be warned of the hazards, that include the above plus the additional fecal matter added to the water.
Thanks

Am I reading correctly that someone has taken wild ducks, and had their wings clipped so they would stay around? That sounds like cruelty to me, and should be reported to the game warden.
I have seen waterfowl as we've boated around the lake, and sometimes they show up around our dock, but I had no idea that people were trying to domesticate the poor things.

I would think that tampering with a migratory bird would be a federal offense, as they are protected/regulated by fed.

These are domestically hatched and partially raised mallards that had their wings clipped and released in our slough.

What slough do you live in? Seeing the earlier video of the tater gun has motivated me to dust mine off and play with it last weekend. I am looking for something to shoot at for target practice and a flight-less duck sounds perfect. I will argue that Aquanet is a better propellant than White Rain.

Spot you surely know who this individual is. He/she even trained them to crossbreed with other domestic waterfowl. How do they trap them so they can clip the wings?

Also how do they catch the hummingbirds and clip their wings so they stay all year. We have a good crop of domestic doves that stay put also.

Yeah, the poop is messy but we must remember that we took over their habitat and must endure them to a certain extent. Why even old Head feeds the geese ( with the misses standing over him with a bat ), but he does have a " tater " gun to shoot at them with.

Semantics. Domestic doves? Maybe, surely "local" doves.
The doves are considered wildlife, whether migratory or not.
For the mallards, the only ones except for injured or domestic ducks migrate.
Potato gun--need more fire power. Like the old "market hunters" on the Chesapeake. Fine piano wire with split shot on it and coiled in a high brass 12 ga. (Believe they may have had an 8 ga. in those days, too.)

Where do CAT's fall in this subject. I have not had my "anything" clipped. Looking for some humor here.

The Director does not have to clip your anything to keep you around, I think you know that if you DID stray to a different slough, you WOULD get your anything clipped. I know this because it is the same way at my house.... I would like to keep my dock where it is.
